Irish Odyssey

In September, 2003, I and ten other members of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters (PSGNP) went on a three week self guided plien-aire painting tour of the west and south coasts of Ireland, beginning on the west coast at Shannon and concluding in Dublin. One of our members was born in Dublin and guided us along an "off the beaten track" tour of out-of-the-way villages from County Clare and County Kerry and the remote and craggy coast of the mountainous Dingle Peninsula and on to Counties Cork, Waterford, Carlow and Wicklow to Dublin. We tarried to paint and to inspect the quality of pub service in such places as Ballybunion, Tralee, An Duingean, Killarney, Cork, Dungarvan and Dublin.
Our goal? To paint an exhibit of work for a show to open on St. Patrick's Day, 2005 in Mukilteo, Washington (just a few miles north of Seattle). I and one other artist brought our pastels and small plien-aire French easels packed in custom made canvas "carry on" bags which included space to carry our supply of papers and colors. Our biggest challenge was the weather - which was humid, windy, and intermittently stormy. The paintings seen here were completed in my studio and are based on forteen 8" X 11" plien-aire paintings brought back from Ireland.
